Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon
Located in the city of Rethymnon, in front of the fortress of Fortezza. Hosts collections from Neolithic and Minoan artifacts found in the area. Distinguish ceramics, jewelery, urns, stamps, figurines and sculptures. Housed since 1991 in the pentagonal building, which stands in front of the main gate of the Fortezza castle.
The exhibits give a historical picture of the cultural history of the county from the Neolithic Age to the Roman period. Presented in chronological sections and excavation units.
The collections include finds from caves, settlements and cemeteries from the Minoan years on, and objects from Geometric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman times found in the excavations of important ancient cities.
The Museum's aim is to promote and display the cultural history of the area in the best possible way. In this context includes the organization of exhibitions, educational programs and various cultural events at the Museum. Distance 12 km.
The fortress of Rethymno Fortezza
The Venetian fortress -Fortezza- is situated on the hill of Paleokastro, west of the city. On this hill was the acropolis of ancient Rithimna city and the sanctuary of Artemis Rokkaias.
In the following centuries, the city of Rethymno grown in the same spot. In 1540 began the construction of the new fortification wall. The invasion of the Turks in 1571 and the destruction of the city, made it imperative for new fortifications. In 1573 the Fortress building begun on the hill of Paleokastro. The original purpose of the construction was to include all houses of the city, something that does not happen. The townspeople after removal of the Turkish danger, began to rebuild their homes inside and outside the castle.
Today the fortress of Fortezza is the most important monument of Rethymno, a trademark of the city. Distance 12 km.

The Monastery of Arkadi became world famous and glorious by the Holocaust during the Cretan Revolution of 1866-1869 against the Ottomans. The heroic resistance and self-sacrifice of hundreds of activists, clergy, women and children made stronger the spirit of the Cretan revolution, and shook the entire western world. The European and American press and many famous intellectuals (such as Victor Hugo) assisted in he change of attitude of the Governments of the time that were opposite to the liberation struggles of Crete. This paved the way for freedom and ultimately to the Union with Greece mainland after a few decades. Other historic buildings inside the monastery, such as Powder Storage, the Museum with relics of the monastery, the cellars (large vaulted apartment divided into a kitchen, mixer, oven, and bread-flour storage) and other buildings. The Ancient Eleftherna
On the north-western slopes of Mount Ida, at an altitude of approximately 380 m and 30 km south of Rethymnon is located the ancient city Eleftherna. Today you can observe the ruins from various periods of the life of ancient Eleftherna. According to tradition, city had taken the name by Elefthereas, one of the Curetes or from the surname of goddess Demeter. The Nisi hill was one of the main cores of the ancient city together with the hill Pyrgi. In these hills there was a district that flourished during the Hellenistic period... Distance 20 km.
The Cave is located in the village Sfentoni Zoniana 43 km from Heraklion and 52 from the city of Rethymno, Crete. This is one of the five most important caves in Greece and the largest in Crete. In a total area of 3,000 sq.m., the visitors can travel the first 270 meters.
According to the research by the Ministry of Culture, the cave was inhabited from Early Minoan till the Roman era.

Melidoni Cave is located 18 km from the village in the prefecture of Rethymno. Called Gerontospilios is one of the most beautiful and historic caves of Crete. Several findings have been found from ancient times indicating that during the Minoan era, the cave served as a place of worship of Talos the bronze giant who was the protector of the island. The cave over the years gave shelter to many locals. At the October of 1823, 370 women and 30 men incarcerated in this cave to escape the Turkish soldiers. The Cretans did not surrender and the Turks after a siege of three months, they burned the rebels alive in the cave. Distance 20 km.
The Minoan palace of Knossos is the main site of the ancient city, an important city in ancient times, from the Neolithic period to the fifth century BC. It is built on the hill of Kefalas, with easy access to the sea and towards the mainland of the island. According to tradition, this was the palace of the wise king Minos.
